TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Drinking water from nearly half of U.S. faucets likely contains “forever chemicals” that may cause cancer and other health problems, according to a government study released Wednesday.

The synthetic compounds known collectively as PFAS are contaminating drinking water to varying extents in large cities and small towns — and in private wells and public systems, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Researchers described the study as the first nationwide effort to test for PFAS in tap water from private sources in addition to regulated ones. It builds on previous scientific findings that the chemicals are widespread, showing up in consumer products as diverse as nonstick pans, food packaging and water-resistant clothing and making their way into water supplies.

Studies of lab animals have found potential links between PFAS chemicals and some cancers, including kidney and testicular, plus issues such as high blood pressure and low birth weight.

Based on the data, researchers estimated that at least one form of PFAS could be found in about 45% of tap water samples nationwide.

Abstract

The microbiological quality of filtered water in a commercial water filter system (Brita) was tested in households and in two laboratories. In 24 of 34 filters used in households, bacterial counts increased in the filtered water up to 6,000 cfu/ml. In 4 of 6 filters tested in the laboratory, bacterial counts in the fresh filtrate were higher than in tap water after approximately one week of use both at room temperature and at 4 degrees C, suggesting growth or biofilm formation in the filter material. In some cases colony counts in the filtered water were 10,000 times those in tap water. The filter material of 5 of 13 new commercial filters was contaminated with bacteria or moulds. National or international regulatory agencies should ensure that water filters marketed for domestic use do not allow deterioration in the microbiological quality of drinking water.

Almost half of the tap water in the US is contaminated with chemicals known as “forever chemicals,” according to a new study from the US Geological Survey.

The number of people drinking contaminated water may be even higher than what the study found, however, because the researchers weren’t able to test for all of these per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, or PFAS, chemicals that are considered dangerous to human health. There are more than 12,000 types of PFAS, according to the National Institutes of Health, but this study looked at only 32 of the compounds.

PFAS are a family of ubiquitous synthetic chemicals that linger in the environment and the human body. PFAS exposure is linked to problems like cancer, obesity, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, decreased fertility, liver damage and hormone suppression, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

In June 2022, based on the latest science, the EPA issued health advisories that said the chemicals are much more hazardous to human health than scientists originally thought and are probably more dangerous even at levels thousands of times lower than previously believed.

“There’s been almost no place scientists have looked where they have not found PFAS,” said DeWitt, a professor of pharmacology and toxicology in the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology at East Carolina University who was not involved in the new study.

PFAS are found in hundreds of household items. The chemicals are used to make carpets and clothes stain-resistant. They keep food from sticking to pans and food packaging, and they’re good at keeping grease and water from soaking through. PFAS are in mobile phones, commercial airplanes, and low-emission vehicles, in the foods you can buy at the farmers market or the grocery store, and in rainwater and dental floss. They’re even in the dust that collects in your home.

If PFAS is in 45% of US water systems, the country will have a lot of work to do, said Dr. Graham Peaslee, a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and concurrent professor of chemistry and biochemistry who does PFAS research at the University of Notre Dame.

“I think that we should try our best to work on how to clean this up. I fear that this is, global warming aside, this is probably the most expensive environmental problem we’re ever going to face,” said Peaslee, who was not involved in the new study. ”There’s nothing that will magically fix it. It’s fairly expensive to clean this up. And it’s a recurring cost, and there’s no permanent solution to it for any particular utility. It looks frightening.”

But the cleanup will have to be done, he said, because these chemicals carry real health consequences, and people can’t exactly avoid drinking water.

“It’s really insidious, this poison,” Peaslee said. “We are going to have to get inventive on how to filter it out for all of our days.”

2/3 of our Phoenix Metro/ east valley water is held back by the Saguaro Lake Damn.  When the water is released it is as green as a leaf ‘this is the algae in the water’ (within every two weeks I go look at this water).  We were there recently making some music for a special group of kids shown in this video:

When the Saguaro Lake Damn water arrives at your local water treatment plant they add a bunch of chemicals that are poisonous and toxic ‘can kill you dead’.  The treatment plants are currently adding much chlorine to our water and fluoride (it is very political –both chemicals are deadly).

Ingesting chlorine with your tap water can have a number of adverse health effects. Some of these effects occur because chlorine tends to form trihalomethanes. Trihalomethanes (THMs), including chloroform, form when chlorine reacts with tiny organic particles found in water. These chemical compounds have been implicated in several adverse health outcomes. Below are some of the potentially harmful effects of chlorine water:

  • Asthma symptoms: One study suggests that exposure to chlorine in swimming pools is associated with increased exercise-induced asthma symptoms in swimmers, even if the swimmers have had no previous asthma symptoms, and even if the chlorine levels in the pool are below the recommended safe levels. When you bathe or shower in chlorinated water, you also absorb chlorine through your skin and breathe in chlorinated steam. If you experience respiratory problems, breathing in chlorine can aggravate the symptoms.
  • Food allergies: One recent study analyzed the effects of dichlorophenols, which are used both in pesticides and in water chlorination. The study found that participants with the highest levels of dichlorophenols in their bodies were more likely to have the most food allergies. This study focused on dichlorophenols in pesticides, though — not in chlorinated water, though the effects may be similar.
  • Congenital abnormalities: A Taiwanese study of nearly 400,000 individuals found that women who were exposed to trihalomethanes in chlorinated water while pregnant were more likely to give birth to children with one of three different birth abnormalities: cleft palates, ventricular septal defects — or holes in the heart — and lack of brain development.
  • Bladder and rectal cancer: A 1995 study published in Environmental Health Perspectives implicated the THM byproducts of water chlorination in bladder and rectal cancer — potentially accounting for 8,000 cases of rectal cancer and 5,000 cases of bladder cancer in the United States every year. Some subsequent studies have found a slight link between chlorine and carcinogenic effects, but other studies have found no link. More research on the subject is necessary.
  • Unpleasant taste and smell: Even if chlorine levels in your drinking water are safe, the chlorine can still impart a bad taste or smell. When your water tastes or smells bad, you’ll probably be less enthusiastic about drinking it, and drinking too little water can lead to dehydration. When your water is unpleasant to drink, you and your family are also more likely to consume less healthful beverages, such as sodas, or to purchase bottled water, which has its own drawbacks.

Excess amounts of fluoride ions in drinking water can cause dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, arthritis, bone damage, osteoporosis, muscular damage, fatigue, joint-related problems, and chronicle issues.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed an effort to restrict the group of chemicals, also dubbed “forever chemicals,” in food and drinking water to improve public health which could help, but the agency hasn’t yet finalized a rule.

In the meantime, Americans can keep themselves safe from the chemicals when grabbing a glass of water from the kitchen sink, in part, by using water filtration systems, one environmental group suggests.

Consumer-available water filtration systems that everyday people can use to rid PFAS from tap water are the center of a new study from the nonprofit activist group Environmental Working Group. Scientists from the group researched the effectiveness of several filtration systems available to consumers across the U.S., and determined that they can serve as a “Band-Aid” to the problem until a longer-term solution comes to form, said Sydney Evans, a senior science analyst at the Environmental Working Group who has led many types of PFAS testing nationwide.

“The end goal is people wouldn’t have to buy a water filter… but that’s just not the reality,” Evans said.

What does the research show?

The group estimated there are “hundreds of brands and models of home water filters” that usually come in six forms: “pitcher or large dispenser, faucet-mounted, faucet-integrated, on-counter, under-sink or whole-house.”

Scientists tested 10 different water filtration systems for specific types of PFAS, notably the most common types: perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). The group tested for 25 different types of PFAS using one water sample for each filter, a summary of the research reads.

Most of the water filters the Environmental Working Group researched contain a medium typically made out of granular activated carbon to remove almost all of the PFAS, said Evans.

“To calculate the percentage PFAS reduction achieved by each filter, we contrasted the sum of the total PFAS found in the tap water sample with the PFAS detected in the filtered water,” the summary reads.

Evans said she was surprised by how well some of the filters worked adequately removed PFA levels almost as well as through reverse osmosis. And while there’s no guarantee they rid of all chemicals, “some kind of reduction is better than nothing,” she said.

The systems come with varying price tags. The group is advocating for legislation that restricts and regulates PFA levels from a federal and local level in part so consumers don’t have to pay out of pocket to drink safe water.

How effective are water filters?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website cautions Americans that “no filter eliminates all contaminants” even though water filters can help rid of forever chemicals. The agency says water consumers should not “assume that if the filter removes one contaminant, it also removes others.”

“Filtration of contaminants depends highly on the amount of contaminant, size of the contaminant particle, and the charge of the contaminant particle,” its website reads.

“Depending on the household’s water needs, pretreatment before filtration may include the addition of coagulants and powdered activated carbon, adjustments in pH or chlorine concentration levels, and other pretreatment processes in order to protect the filter’s membrane surface,” it continues.

What are the health risks of drinking water contaminated by PFAS?

Americans who drink water from the faucet contaminated by the chemicals are exposed to various health risks attributed to PFAS, including illnesses like cancer, low birth weight, and thyroid disease.

Location matters when it comes to risk level. A national study from the U.S. Geological Survey released last week shows that people living in urban areas are most at risk of having PFAS in their tap water while those living in some rural regions have a lower chance of consuming those chemicals.

According to a March 2022 survey of 2,246 American adults conducted by Aquasana showed that more than three-fourths of Americans are already filtering their water. The percentage of users grew between three percentage points between 2020 and 2022.

Those surveyed said they were most concerned about lead, chlorine, and chloramines and fearful of bacteria, cysts, and viruses. More than half agreed “they are more concerned about their health because of the pandemic, and 40% said they are “now more concerned about the quality of the unfiltered water in their homes because of COVID-19.”

‘There is still a lot of work to be done’

Experts are adamant that regulation is the key to keeping people safe from long-term exposure to PFAS.

The Biden administration through the EPA proposed a regulation in March that if finalized, “would regulate PFOA and PFOS as individual contaminants, and will regulate four other PFAS – PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS, and GenX Chemicals – as a mixture,” a news release about the proposal reads.

“Communities across this country have suffered far too long from the ever-present threat of PFAS pollution,” wrote Michael Regan, an administrator for the EPA, at the time the proposal was announced.

Justin Colacino, an associate professor of environmental health sciences at the University of Michigan, said if the new regulations proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency become reality, it would be “a major public health victory toward reducing exposure to these toxic and persistent chemicals.”

He added: “There is still a lot of work to be done, though. With thousands of different PFAS chemicals on the market, we’ll continue to need innovative new strategies to regulate how these chemicals are used in our products to protect the health of people and the environment.”

Critics have argued it could cost the nation billions to make that a reality.

What are other ways to stay safe from PFAS?

Aside from the presence of chemicals in tap water, PFAS are commonly used in consumer products like nonstick cookware and linings of fast-food boxes. The Environmental Working Group recommends a few tips Americans can use to stay safe from PFAS in those items, including:

◾ “Skip optional stain-repellent treatment on new carpets and furniture.”

◾ “Cut back on fast food and greasy carryout food” because it often comes from wrappers treated with PFAs.

◾ “Be wary of all fabrics labeled stain- or water-repellent.”

◾ “Avoid PTFE-based nonstick pans and kitchen utensils.”

◾ “Pop popcorn the old-fashioned way – on the stovetop.”

A recent study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey found that about half the tap water in the country has PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances that have been known to cause serious health issues among the population.

The study found that “forever chemicals” can be found in about 45 percent of the country’s drinking water. The Wall Street Journal reported that the testing—focused on 716 locations—was “one of the most extensive assessments” ever conducted and extended for five years. The study focused on collecting water directly from a homeowner tap where exposure occurs, one researcher said.

PFAS are a group of over 4,000 synthetic chemicals that have been produced by industries since the 1940s. They are primarily used in fire retarding foams, non-stick cookware, water repellents, waterproof clothes, carpets, textiles, and take-out containers.

These toxic chemicals do not break down naturally and accumulate over time in humans, animals, and the overall environment. But their most common source is groundwater. These “forever chemicals” are linked to kidney and testicular cancers, thyroid disease, and high cholesterol. Health officials believe that 99 percent of Americans have at least some PFAS in their blood.

“This USGS study can help members of the public to understand their risk of exposure and inform policy and management decisions regarding testing and treatment options for drinking water,” Kelly Smalling, a USGS research chemist and lead author of the new study, told NPR.

Research has found that the greatest exposure to these chemicals were found in some of the most populated regions of the country, including Southern California, and the Eastern Seaboard.

TRENDPOST: The Trends Journal has reported extensively on these chemicals and their impact on the population’s health.

Analysis published in Environmental Health Perspectives said scientists believe that these chemicals can lead to health problems like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

NPR noted that these researchers recommend that concerned individuals contact their state environmental protection agency or health department, and your local water utility to find out what actions they can take to limit any risks. Traditional drinking water treatment technologies are not able to remove them.
