7 percent of water pipes in Texas are made of lead, new report shows

It will cost about $60 billion to replace them, according to an EPA report released this week.

We have a solution to this very serious problem.

Let’s find a small family business that is committed to installing this service on each home

Microbiological contamination of drinking water in a commercial household water filter system – PubMed (nih.gov)

Many of our water quality problems in the world can be solved by small family water treatment companies.  The point of entry equipment must be exchanged every five years by people who care (to prevent microbiological contamination of your drinking water).  The United States government should not be required to pick up the bill for removing the lead from your drinking water.  This is a problem that you and I can solve.

Here are the words of Publius (how he would have addressed this topic ‘Let’s solve this lead in our drinking water problem – never to be seen or heard again’)

You will, no doubt, at the same time, have collected from the general scope of this lead in the water problem, that [these ideas: let’s get the small family water treatment companies ‘who care’ involved] proceed from a source who supports the Constitution. Yes, my countrymen, I own to you that, after having given it an attentive consideration, I am clearly of the opinion it is in your interest to adopt it.

Happy will it be if our choice should be directed by a judicious estimate of our true interests, unperplexed and unbiased by considerations with the public good. But this is a thing more ardently to be wished than seriously to be expected.  Let us come together on this topic and make it so.

If there is any opposition to this concept: It cannot be doubted that much of the opposition which will be made may hereafter make its appearance, will spring from sources, blameless at least, if not respectable—the honest errors of minds led astray by preconceived jealousies and fears.

I humbly present to you this notion: if everyone in this great country had this device installed at your point of entry:

My fellow countrymen and women; let’s come together and do this:

Find small family water treatment companies that care; for a small monthly investment install a whole house lead removal filter on every home in our great USA (these must be exchanged every five years to prevent microbiological contamination of your drinking water).

Political discord[edit]

Hamilton, predicting the initial Anti-Federalist response would continue, correctly foresaw the US Constitution as a polarizing issue. In reference to those who would oppose the Constitution, he claimed, “A torrent of angry and malignant passions will be let loose.” According to Hamilton:

An enlightened zeal for the energy and efficiency of government will be stigmatized as the offspring of a temper fond of despotic power and hostile to the principles of liberty.

May I please share with you some information about how my family began running our water treatment company in Phoenix metro Arizona?

To be continued; the continued story of Beginning at Cesco (founded in 1961 by my founder father and Tom McCalabe)

When my mother married my founder father – in 1966 he took his half of the Cesco Soft Water customers and began Boyett’s family Rayne Water Conditioning in Mesa Arizona (the dealership was known as Rayne of Tempe Mesa).  Cesco soft water was a water treatment franchise; Rayne Water Conditioning is a franchise water dealer.  My founder father was a very social character and found great value in the collaboration of spectacular people. Rayne Water had some renowned water treatment people.  My father was not the first owner of Rayne of Tempe – Mesa AZ; Bob Faulk was.

Bob Faulk was known in the Rayne circles as a gifted entrepreneur and business evangelist.  Unfortunately, Bob died young from cancer and before he passed sold Rayne of Mesa – Tempe to Bob Schmidt ‘an employee’.  It is from Bob Schmidt that my parents purchased Rayne of Mesa – Tempe.  This is where my Boyett’s family water treatment story began.  When my founder’s mother and father purchase Rayne of Mesa – Tempe from Bob Schmidt in December 1966 I was 6 months in my founder’s mother’s womb.  I heard about all these developments from a pre-birth state (in the womb).

Innovation of Boyett’s family water treatment

……all progress depends on the unreasonable man.  George Bernard Shaw  Man and Superman

Bob Faulk was an unreasonable man.  His business methods were so spectacular that he was the frontman for a major advertising initiative established by Rayne Water Conditioning.  His wanted picture appeared in all the water treatment magazines around the United States of America.

At David Nancarrow’s memorial, a story was told about his airplane flight with Bob Falk…..

“On a return trip from Mexico with Bob Falk (the first Rayne dealer in Phoenix) Dave was flying his own plane and was running late in getting Bob to LAX to make his connecting flight to Phoenix.  Dave called the tower and stated that he had Yul Brenner on board and would they please ask the airline to hold the flight for him.  They did and a very embarrassed Bob Falk with his very bald head and very dark glasses made his flight to Phoenix.  (For those who didn’t know Bob, he did resemble Yul Brenner in stature and doubly so with his totally hairless pate.)”

My father considered his association with Rayne Water Conditioning as being one of the most important investments in his life.  This association provided him with great associations and lifelong friendships; it helped set the course for his work being an important leader in the rental water treatment industry in the Phoenix area of Arizona and the East Valley of Arizona.

On the subject of the pfas (forever) chemical (the US Government is in the process of establishing regulations for this dangerous chemical in our drinking water (it is everywhere).  It is in our Phoenix metro drinking water; it is also in our East Valley Arizona drinking water.

I have an idea:

Let’s not depend on our United States of America leaders to clean up our drinking water.  Let’s take action by attaching this to our point of entry for your homes:

Whole House Carbon Filtration – Boyett’s Family Water Treatment (azh2o.com)

This will remove any and all pfas (forever chemical) from your entire home; and your drinking water.  There is no water waste and there is no salt and there is no electricity required.

To the People of the State of Arizona and our great nation.

After an unequivocal experience of the desperate situation, we have caused for ourselves with the pfas (forever chemical), you are called upon to deliberate on a new individual water Constitution for your homes. The subject speaks its own importance; comprehending in its consequences, nothing less than the existence of our family’s health and safety and welfare of the parts of which it is composed, the fate of an empire, in many respects, the most interesting the world. It has been frequently remarked, that it seems to have been reserved to the people of this country, by their conduct and example, to decide the important question, whether societies of men are really capable or not, of establishing good water treatment techniques, or whether they are forever destined to depend on the tainted pfas (forever chemical) water to drink, for their household water and on accident and force. If there be any truth in the remark, the crisis, at which we arrive, may with propriety be regarded as the drastic water situation which we have caused for ourselves.  If we decide not to take action to treat the pfas (forever chemical) out of our home drinking water; that decision is to be made; and a wrong election of the part we shall act, may, in this view, deserve to be considered as the general misfortune of mankind.

If everyone installs this water treatment method on the point of entry of their homes

Whole House Carbon Filtration – Boyett’s Family Water Treatment (azh2o.com)

If this is exchanged every 5 years without fail – there will be no more problems with your drinking water (positively – the pfas chemical will be gone from your water).

If you rent a whole house lead filter; if you rent a whole house pfas filter from Boyett’s family water treatment; we exchange this unit every 5 years at no charge.  This will ensure you have spectacular water at all times.  If you ever need us to provide service at any time – there is never a fee to you.

my image can be seen in the reflection as I took this picture with my phone.   As I juxtaposed this picture in my business journal, I made this note by the picture: these two sure loved one another after all those years.  Roberta told me that she was my father’s first (he was 32 years old).  I asked how did you know?  She said, “A girl knows”.  I thought to myself ‘I couldn’t have waited that long’, but this thought gave me high respect for this great man William Brian Boyett.    My father had patience in matters having to do with marriage.  In my opinion, one of their success formulas was their great passion they had for each other (and great respect).

William Brian Boyett, Annetta Boyett, Dale Boyett The photo was taken on 19 June 1996 at the Botanical Gardens in Denver, Colorado.  Annetta and Dale are the siblings of my father.

William Jesse and Christia Boyett (my grandparents – William Brian Boyett’s parents)

William Jesse Boyett was born on March 13, 1900, on the family farm which his ancestors settled in 1879, in southwest Stephens County.  The Comanche’s still controlled the frontier then.

His father died before he was born.  He told about brush arbor revivals that the Boyett family attended at Eolian which was about 4 miles east.  A tabernacle consisting of a frame structure with mesquite branches covering it to provide shade was filled with seats and a pulpit.  Families came from miles around in wagons and buggies and camped out for days while worshipping and visiting.

Ibex was an oil boom town 3 miles west of the Boyett farm.   Christia Askew, born in Woodson, Texas, graduated from Baylor University in 1926 and became a teacher at Ibex.  She married W.J. Boyett and 1929 at the school Christmas program.  They moved into a 2-room teacherage on the school ground.

The following year the couple built a house on the Boyett farm where they farmed and ranched.  They were both active for the remainder of their lives in the Eolian church.  In the early days, there were several commercial buildings in Eolian but only the church building remains today.  At this writing in 1986, it is still a very active, well-kept, country church.  Christia was an excellent piano player and served faithfully as the church piano player and adult Sunday School teacher for over 40 years.  Although crippled by polio since childhood, she courageously contributed her talents, bad weather or not.

Neighbors Orbie and Ethyl Tomlin and Ben and Blanch McKelvain were frequent visitors to the Boyett home for a domino game called “42”.

During the 1940s, Stamps Baxter gospel music was popular and communities would hold “singings” at churches and school buildings throughout the area.  The Boyett children remember traveling regularly to communities such as Harpersville, Necessity, Breckenridge, Albany, Abilene, Moran, Cisco,  and Redgap to participate in “singings.”  The Boyett family members were all musically inclined and provided special music for church and social events as the children grew.

Killing mesquite trees with kerosene became a major interest to W.J., sometimes called “Willie.”  With the help of his sons and others, he became one of the primary mesquite eradication contractors in Stephen and Shackelford counties.  Along with farming and ranching, he continued this work until his retirement in 1973.  Christia Boyett died of natural causes in January 1978 and her husband died a few days later in a car accident.  They are both buried at Plumb Branch Cemetery which is a rural cemetery at Eolian near the old Hatchet place.

W.J. and Christia have 3 children.  Brian, since graduation from Texas Tech has lived in Phoenix, Arizona where he has his own business.  Dale, since graduation from Texas Tech, has worked as an engineer for Texas Instruments in Dallas.  Annetta, upon graduation from McMurry College, married a medical doctor who accepted a teaching position at Cambridge University in England.  England has become her permanent home.

Is Your Water Filter Doing More Harm Than Good? Here’s How To Safeguard Your Drinking Water

From this story

My hotel room was conveniently outfitted with a water filtration tap for filtered water on demand. I thought, great! But after quickly chugging a glass, I immediately noticed that the water smelled and tasted overwhelmingly algal and swamp-like—like what you’d equate with a fish tank. Coincidentally, I began experiencing acute gastrointestinal symptoms in the weeks that followed, with tests eventually confirming a diagnosis of an intestinal parasitic infection.

Was the filtered water the culprit? There’s no way of knowing for sure, but it certainly stands out as a red flag, and science says it’s possible. The experience compelled me to take a closer look at water filters—when they can help us, and when they can fall short and harm us.

Water filtration devices are increasingly being used as a countermeasure to deal with tap water quality concerns by removing unwanted chemicals, tastes, and odors from the public water supply. While they can contribute to increased water safety and an enhancement of water quality, if they’re not adequately maintained, they could actually be doing more harm than good.

Can an old water filter make you sick?

“People can get sick from filters that are poorly maintained,” says Nancy G. Love, PhD, distinguished professor and award-winning environmental engineering researcher at the University of Michigan. According to Love, studies show that bacteria grow well on activated carbon (including point-of-use filters), and that filters can actually elevate the levels of bacteria in our drinking water.

study that tested the microbiological quality of filtered water in a household water filter system found that, in some cases, bacterial colony counts in the filtered water were 10,000 times those in tap water, suggesting growth or biofilm formation in the filter material. Equally alarming is research showing how dramatically the bacterial composition changes across a filter, which in turn may influence our gut microbiome.

Water filters are only as good as their upkeep

Because most filters work by capturing and holding contaminants, it’s important to replace them regularly to avoid them becoming incubators of bacteria. “Water filter components absorb a finite amount,” says Wang. “Once that threshold is reached, the water can still be cycled through, but it will not remove any contaminants and may actually reverse contaminate the water with the bacteria growing in the filter.”

“Filter usage is notoriously difficult to track, and many consumers do not replace filters in a timely manner,” says Wang.

Boyett’s family water treatment utilizes granular activated media as a main ingredient in all of our units.  We exchange these units every 5 years free of charge (if you don’t exchange these units every 5 years; your water will be contaminated).

We were fortunate to take a picture with him recently.  Michael is blind and 80% deaf; he is one of the best fiddle players, and mandolin players in America today. I want to live my life like you Michael (his band member says – he shreds life each day; he lives it to the fullest extent).

I was very moved when I watched his documentary

Treating contaminant: organics

Just as with the nonliving inorganic suspended solids dissolved solids have a category based on living components: dissolved organic compounds.  They are distinguished by their composition of carbon and hydrogen atoms, among others.

Many of these solids have a weak polarity due to the structure of the molecule.  Because of this, many organics will interact with the polar water molecule and act as dissolved solids.  These are referred to as hydrophilic, or water-loving.  Examples include alcohol, acetic acid, and sugar.

Organics that do not have this polarity tend to assemble together, or agglomerate, when in water.  These are referred to as hydrophobic, or water-fearing.  Fuels or vegetable oils are examples.  In water treatment, these organics are addressed separately because they have unique characteristics that require unique treatment strategies.  Examples include methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and perfluorooctonoic acid (PFOA).

The dangers posed by organics range from a disagreeable odor to life-threatening carcinogenic effects.  Advances in manufacturing technology have produced a wide array of ultimately dangerous products, such as MTVBE, PFOA, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).  Industrial chemical spills and organic waste discharge from farming and animal husbandry have added to these dangers.  The disposal of prescription drugs into our groundwater systems is a recent addition to the list of sources of organic contaminants.  Prescription drugs are also in our water because our bodies do not mobilize all the medications.

The treatment of organics includes absorption (bonding to external surfaces, ultrafiltration, and ion exchange.

For the removal of organic contaminants, the most widely used technology is the adsorption of the organics by activated carbon.  Carbon is marketed in granular form for use in tanks and in block form for use in cartridges.  The extreme porosity of activated carbon makes it an effective treatment for the removal of most organic contaminants, including many of the prescription medicines and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that have been released into our water sources.  The removal effectiveness is highly influenced by the contact time (water flow per volume) of the carbon.

Activated carbon is also an effective tool for removing chlorine and chloramine from water.  A form of carbon called catalytic carbon acts as both an oxidizer and adsorbent.  It is employed primarily as an oxidizing medium.  However, it possesses adsorption capacity, as well.

If you’d like to have peace of mind against any Organics in your water (or pfas – forever chemicals), here are four complete home solutions (filtered water out of every faucet):

…. a wrist stabilizer for Francisco.

Zach was so kind to donate the soul of his shoe to pull this off. It was one of the most intriguing endeavors I have been involved.  I continue to ask Cisco if it is still working. Is there any changes or improvements we need to make?

It is important to keep Francisco’s wrist in good shape to prepare your water equipment.

Arizona reaches to our toilets for more drinking water.

Arizona is expected to make several changes to its state water policy that will keep the state a leader in treating and recycling wastewater. The new changes are so unique ADEQ created a new title for them: recycled waters rules. The biggest change will end the state’s prohibition against using recycled wastewater as a drinking water source.

82 % of Phoenix Metro and East Valley Arizona water is recycled sewage water; directed sewage water to our drinking water system with a method called DPR (directed potable reuse).  Ooooo.

In sewage water, we have E.Coli Coliform and pathogens.  For your peace of mind, we have developed a water filter that will disintegrate any E.Coli, Coliform, or pathogens from your drinking water (and provide you delicious +Mg+pH water-saving reverse osmosis water).

As my father watched other successful people; he learned that hard work changes circumstances.  He consistently worked hard in order to become independent and overcome his incredibly humble beginnings.

Beginning at Cesco

My father founder William Brian Boyett began his entrepreneurial career in a partnership with Tom McCalub in Phoenix Arizona.  They met at the Cross Roads Methodist Church in Phoenix.  As they walked the beautiful grounds Tom explained to my father how he heard of this business concept of renting water treatment equipment to people and businesses (and every once in a while, you would go exchange the tank).  Circa 1960 Phoenix Cesco was born.  They established a partnership and grew the business.  When my father met my founder mother Roberta Jean Hayden he decided to take half of the water softener rental customers to Mesa; together they formed Boyett’s family water treatment.  Before it was Boyett’s family water treatment (it was called Rayne Water Conditioning – another great story worth being told ‘I spent my whole life – until age 53 – representing Rayne Water Conditioning’).

One day Nick Memmo ‘a water legend – worked with  the famous Richard J. Heckmann, U.S. Filter‘s chairman

U.S filter company has a great story to tell.

First Billion-Dollar Water Treatment Company, 1997

In 1997, USF became the United States’ first billion-dollar provider of industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment systems, products, and services. Fortune magazine ranked USF among the 100 fastest-growing companies in the world, with compound annual revenue growth of 66% between 1991–96.

Company History of United States filter company:

United States Filter Corporation (USF) is the world’s largest and fastest-growing water and wastewater treatment company. Founded in 1953, it was once a regional company with less than 500 employees in the United States and annual revenues of less than $30 million. USF has since grown into a worldwide industry leader with more than 10,000 employees, annualized revenues of $1.36 billion, and operations on every continent with customers such as Coca-Cola, Chrysler, and 3M.

Since 1991, USF has acquired and integrated more than 100 companies worldwide including many of the oldest, most-respected names in the water and wastewater industry. These acquisitions have enabled USF to greatly increase its presence in those industries, expand its worldwide service in all of the markets it serves, and build its installed base, service network, and range of products and technologies.

  • Nick Memmo sent Bret Vessey (now the President of Rayne) to meet with me to inform me they will no longer renew our Rayne Water Conditioning franchise agreement.  Bret Vessey informed me that we did nothing wrong; they want to take a new direction (you have until March 31, 2023, to change your name).  The name that we chose is Boyett family water treatment.  My Boyett’s family is pleased to serve you today.

My father studied animal husbandry at Texas Tech University (after college he honored his ROTC commitments and fought for us in the Korean War; then worked at the National Cotton Council).  He saw Tom Mccalub’s idea as similar to his study (place an organism in a certain location to be healthy a cow – in a pasture so it can add value to many).  In William Brian Boyett’s eyes; placing a soft water tank at your home and nurturing this equipment with great caring sentient intentions of spectacular water treatment – will positively change your life and have a dynamic impact on the community ‘where these tanks reside’.  This is what William Brian taught us and we perform his great work for you.

It was at Cesco that my father learned the principles of listening to you and developing products and services that will make you very happy.  He taught us to keep you very happy.

Tom Mccalub eventually sold his Cesco and it continued for some time.  Beginning at Cesco is a story of the history of this beginning of William Brian Boyett (what he learned here and applied and taught us) to make your water treatment experience pleasant and how it has given us the desire to be the very best in the world and perform our rental water treatment actions to provide you safe and delicious water.

We wish to turn our business into an enduring great company with your help and important feedback.  The way we perform our processes we hope will show to you our caring intentions of good professional business in every single activity.

Millions in the U.S. could currently be at risk of consuming toxic material through their drinking water, according to a new survey released by the Environmental Protection Agency. The report found there are more than 9 million lead service lines – known to be a “significant source” of lead contamination – used to carry drinking water to homes throughout the nation.

The Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey and Assessment, conducted in 2021 as part of requirements under the Safe Drinking Water Act, looked at more than 3,600 public water systems across the country and its territories. Based on those results, EPA officials estimate that there are roughly 9.2 million lead service lines in the U.S.

Among the most formidable of the obstacles which our new water Constitution will have to encounter may readily be distinguished the obvious interest of a certain class of men and women in every State to resist all changes which may hazard a diminution of the power, emolument, and consequence of the offices they hold under the State establishments; and the perverted ambition of another class of men and women, who will either hope to aggrandize themselves by the confusions of their country or will flatter themselves with fairer prospects of elevation from the subdivision of the empire into several partial confederacies than from its union under one government.  Let us look past these selfish indulgences and provide everyone with safe, and delicious drinking water at every faucet in your home.

It is not, however, my design to dwell upon observations of this nature. I am well aware that it would be disingenuous to resolve indiscriminately the opposition of any set of men and women (merely because their situations might subject them to suspicion) into interested or ambitious views. Candor will oblige us to admit that even such men and women may be actuated by upright intentions; and it cannot be doubted that much of the opposition which has made its appearance, or may hereafter make its appearance, will spring from sources, blameless at least, if not respectable–the honest errors of minds led astray by preconceived jealousies and fears. So numerous indeed and so powerful are the causes which serve to give a false bias to the judgment, that we, upon many occasions, see wise and good men on the wrong as well as on the right side of questions of the first magnitude to society. This circumstance, if duly attended to, would furnish a lesson of moderation to those who are ever so much persuaded of their being in the right in any controversy. And a further reason for caution, in this respect, might be drawn from the reflection that we are not always sure that those who advocate the truth are influenced by purer principles than their antagonists. Ambition, avarice, personal animosity, party opposition, and many other motives not more laudable than these, are apt to operate as well upon those who support as those who oppose the right side of a question (the question is this: can everyone in the United States have safe, delicious affordable water ‘without the US government having to foot the bill’)?  Were there not even these inducements to moderation, nothing could be more ill-judged than that intolerant spirit that has, at all times, characterized political parties. For in politics, as in religion, it is equally absurd to aim at making proselytes by fire and sword. Heresies in either can rarely be cured by persecution.

I stand up as an impassioned leader in the rental water treatment community of Phoenix metro and the East Valley areas of Arizona saying this: we can provide everyone in our areas affordable, delicious, and safe water to drink in every facet of your home.  There is no water waste and there is no salt.   Our lead-free water treatment equipment can be connected to your point of entry and we exchange this every 5 years at no charge.

Our main thing is to provide you with safe delicious water: affordably – conveniently and effectively.

Boyett’s family water treatment purpose is to advance residential water treatment in the Phoenix metro area and East Valley of Arizona.

The Phoenix metro area of Arizona is now at a population of 6 million people (according to our friend ‘a lineman at Arizona Public Service’) our phoenix metro area population will increase to 15 million people in 15 years.  82% of our drinking water is recycled sewage water.

In our office – most days, this is our side thing – bossy.  He is a stray and walked into our office like he owned the place.  I enjoy his company every day.  He provides me an escape from business to the life of a cat, and I love it – I love Bossy.

To make sure we get our processes and products right for you today we are asking ourselves these five questions:

We manufacture rental residential water equipment – why?

Because it is what we know the best and we love helping special people.

Why is that important?

Because it is the best way to make innovative, high-quality products that will give you peace of mind.

Why is that important?

Because we can afford to give you the best people, and the best products – conveniently delivered to you at an affordable rate.

Why is that important?

Because we need the credibility of being a successful business, and the resources to do business in the way we think it ought to be done.

Why is that important?

Because we ultimately exist to be a role model and tool for residential water treatment change, and the only way we can do that is to be financially viable and successful enough to have the rest of the business community looking to us as a role model.

To save our precious water; we are nudging our industry to use whole-house water filters that do not utilize any water waste; use no salt and use no electricity.  This material must be exchanged at least every five years or it will contaminate your water (when you rent a Boyett’s family water treatment whole house filter; we exchange this equipment every 5 years at no charge).

This – we can be the best in the world.  We have been inventing this concept for 56 years.

I’d like to go back to ‘the sole for the wrist project’

It was because of Zach’s unselfishness that we had a shoe sole for Francisco’s wrist project.

Zach brings to light the soul of Boyett’s family water treatment cross training-culture.

Because of Ben, we have Zach.

This image is of Ben and Bossy.

One of our famous and beloved clients is M. W was the Chairman of the board of Gateway Bank (  Gateway Bank – The Only Community Bank in Mesa AZ (gcbaz.com)   before this important role he was the chief legal counsel of America West Airlines (which became American Airlines). I loved the theme and culture of the cross-training culture of America West Airlines :

I would see the same person working at the ticket counter one week; the next time I flew I would see this same person on the tar mat directing the plane toward the gate on touch down.  Several of my friends worked at America West Airlines. These same friends informed me that the work at America West is very interesting and rewarding because of the variation of work activities.

The culture of cross-training and job variance is alive and well at Boyett’s family water treatment.  Zach began working as a route technician

And then began working as a reverse osmosis technician; working with Francisco.

As C is retiring on Friday Zach is showing great clerical and customer service aptitude in helping us in our office.  He is doing a great job and we really enjoy working with Zach every Friday.

One day Zach asked me about the history of our very important Customer service Data program which rules our days and drives our productivity.  We feel the Nevada computer system will fundamentally drive the new phase of our water treatment industry (specifically with their technologically advanced tickler system).

The day that we said yes to D.M. and his very advanced computer system in 2001 ‘my life will never be the same’.  D.M. became my mentor and great collaborator; even a band member.

Because D.M very kind and unselfish and educated nature (D.M is a great man of action to write this)

The History of Nevada Computer
My father was the president of a bank in Nevada, Iowa, a town of about 5,000. In 1963 he decided that computers were not just a toy or scientific instruments, but something that could be used in business. He purchased an IBM computer for approximately $300,000. In today’s dollars, that would be more than 2.5 million dollars. It took up over 1200 square feet and required special cooling equipment so that it wouldn’t overheat. It was so powerful that it could do the processing for the bank in a little over an hour each day. So he decided to help cost justify the computer so that he would see if other companies and or individuals wanted to rent time on the computer for their projects. He had 3 or 4 accountants that purchased time. He had some large construction companies that did their payroll on it and he had a request from a Culligan in Boone, Iowa. The Culligan rented their softeners and every month would send a bill to their customers for the rent. So my father’s programmers wrote a program for that Culligan to do its billing.
The Culligan would keep track of all of their transactions for each month and then they would put that information on a Greyhound bus to Nevada, Iowa, and in Nevada, they would prepare the month’s information. Each customer had a “header” card punched with holes in it to show the account number and name of the customer. Then, each transaction for the month also needed a card punched for each customer. So if the customer had purchased 2 bags of salt on March 5th, the card would have the customer’s account number, a code that represented salt, the quantity purchased, the price per bag, and the date of the sale. If the customer also had a rental, a card needed to be punched for that too. Then all of the cards for that Culligan were put through a sorter so that each customer’s cards were grouped together. Then they were run through the computer and postcard statements were printed and mailed. Now the ledger for each customer was put on a bus back to the Boone, Iowa store.
It is very difficult today to understand that this was an improvement. Just imagine, a customer calling you and wanting to know their balance. You have to tell them, we have what your balance was at the beginning of last month. But if you have purchased anything this month you will need to add it to the total and if you have paid anything since that time you will need to subtract it from the total. But this was so innovative and such a time saver that the owner of the Culligan in Boone decided to start a business of doing this processing for other Culligans. Soon he had Culligans all over the United States putting their transactions on a bus on the last day of the month and sending them to Nevada, Iowa. Oh, why a bus? There was no Fed X in existence yet!!!
At one point there were over 300 Culligans sending their information to Nevada each month. By the mid-1980s, the price of computers had dropped drastically. You could now purchase one for less than $10,000. So Nevada Computer wrote a new program so their customers could do the work at their store instead of sending it to Nevada, Iowa. That first system was called BBIS. If you looked at it today you would think it was very primitive, but it was an excellent system. Soon our customers were coming up with new ideas to add to the system and BBIS continued to get better. Then, in 1991 Nevada Computer decided to write a totally new system called WaterFlex. It continued to get better until the year 1999 when all of a sudden came the Y2K scare. Everyone was afraid that all computers were going to crash because they were not programmed for a year starting with a 20 instead of a 19. Nevada Computer again totally rewrote the program and called it WaterFlex for Windows. It was written in a development language that would allow it to continue to improve on itself without having to go through the whole process of writing the whole program over again. Nevada Computer’s success has come from having great customers with excellent suggestions that we have been able to implement as part of the total program. We have programmers that every day are writing new programs to add new features to the WaterFlex for Windows program and about every 18 months a new release of the program is released to our customers.

Souces:

Nothin’s better than a cool drink of water – but too much can give you a bellyache.

We can live only two days without water (who’d want to).

We can live 5 days without food (I think I could live 7 days without it).

In the last two days we have had two clients upgrade to the most advanced water treatment technology in Arizona (one went from Potassium use ‘soft water guzzling unit’ to no water waste; no salt – nonelectric unit).  This gives us great hope for this new journey: to provide our fellow Arizona neighbors with great-tasting and safe water.

Fundamentally, writing these blogs to you has been one of the most beneficial and intriguing, and driving forces for our business.  This helps us to know more about what you may need.  Most days working in the office until 5 PM; you are kind to receive me into your homes to visit about what water treatment you want (and most of the day on Saturdays).  Thank you for informing me of your needs (this helps us to triangulate the best course for our industry).  Our onus is to develop effective water treatment products for Arizona that save water, and eliminate salt use – do not utilize electricity (this is the best for our Arizona water – no salt usage and no water waste).  If we develop these effective water treatment concepts; can these be utilized in other states (around the world)?  We shall see.
