This article helps explain why our water is so hard; and contains high TDS (total dissolved solids); and contains high levels of chlorine.

This is my shirttail relative Senator Carl Hayden.  It is because of his great water work that we have enough water for (6 million people in the Phoenix Arizona area; in 15 years there will be 12 million people in our area).

Carl Trumbull Hayden (October 2, 1877 – January 25, 1972) was an American politician and the first United States Senator to serve seven terms. Serving as Arizona‘s first Representative for eight terms before entering the Senate, Hayden set the record for longest-serving member of the United States Congress more than a decade before his retirement from politics.

Hayden helped us have plentiful water resources in our beautiful state of Arizona.  We are now 6 million people; in 15 years we will be 12 million people in the Phoenix Arizona area.

I’d like to tell you a little about my shirttail relative Senator Carl Hayden.  He was known as the silent Senator.  When he spoke before Congress he was always brief and his words had a great impact.  Because of his great reputation and character, his colleagues had so much respect for him.  When he asked a favor; it is said that people ‘fell over themselves’ trying to help his dreams come true.  Senator Carl Hayden helped tame the West with plenty of water (he was also a great ‘sheriff’).  Senator Hayden will always be remembered as a persistent, driving force behind the Central Arizona Project (CAP) ‘this was his baby’.   The CAP has helped Arizona acquire the needed water resources to be 6 million strong today.

Hayden understood water and its importance in taming the west. He knew our greatest challenge here in Arizona was water (either too much or not enough).  He experienced the great Phoenix flood of 1891 (so devastating – the town’s communication was cut off for three months).  Farms, homes, bridges were all wiped out.  Many families were displaced and several people killed by the waters.  All the people wanted the water to be controlled.  This insight on Western water issues provided him valuable influence when collaborating on this important topic.

Hayden was around a long time in politics.  The people of Arizona loved his so much – they kept him in politics for sixty-seven years.  He started locally serving in important positions and then when Arizona became a state in 1912 we elected him to the House of Representatives for seven terms. In 1926 Senator Carl Hayden became a U.S. Senator and retired in 1969.  If I was to meet him; I would have been two years old.

Senator Hayden’s support for reliable water resources began – the Salt River Project (the first federal reclamation projects).  My grandfather (Wilford Hayden) served on the board of the Salt River Project.  We love this organization.  I recently enjoyed a camping trip along a mountain near Roosevelt Lake.  As I continue to study the history of my famous shirt tail relative (Senator Carl Hayden) I appreciate even more his hard work (from 1926-1969).

The purpose of the federal reclamation project was to make arid lands useful by providing a regular water source for irrigation (similar to the Hohokam Indians).  Lucky for us, the federal government thought irrigation was the heart of making the land hospitable for settlers moving west.  We can survive for five days without water; 5 weeks without food.

Carl Hayden also helped complete an engineering study for his constituents (driven by the need for a piece of the reclamation service pie); which led to the construction of the Coolidge Dam on the Gila River and the San Carlos Irrigation District.

Hayden was always looking for ways to make life easier for us Arizona locals; as well as the United States Government (In 1970 he authored and secured a passage allowing local water-user associations to take over and maintain the federal reclamations projects).

The ultimate accomplishment was when the CAP was authorized through the Colorado River Basin Project Act of 1968.  He carried a torch from the 1920s for a centrally located Arizona water project, but he met continued resistance factions.

I will always be indebted to my shirttail relative Senator Hayden for giving us a great amount of water to apply our water treatment processes.  As the CAP water flows 336 miles from Lake Havasu to Phoenix; the water gets harder.  I recently checked the water in Sun Lakes and East Mesa and Phoenix and Buckeye; the water tested 22 grains hard (it usually tests 16 grains ‘extremely hard’).  When this water reaches the municipal water treatment plants; this water has so many algae and bacteria – each city must add enough chlorine ‘so at the end of the line’; it tests 1 part per million of chlorine content.  Chlorine dissipates; therefore, the homes in between get a higher dose of chlorine.  The chlorine content of the water is so high – some people are not adding chlorine to their pools.

We have some solutions to tame your hard water (we have been treating the hard water in the Phoenix Area and surrounding cities for 53 years).

Our dynamic duel whole house water softener and carbon filter will address the high chlorine content too.

We also have an affordable solution to the high TDS (total dissolved solids) in our water.

Just give us a call to have soft/ chlorine free water that is purified.

Senator Carl Hayden is my shirttail relative.  On two occasions Senator Carl Hayden claimed my mother (Roberta Jean Hayden Boyett) and her siblings as his nieces and nephews (there were 8).  I was told this story by two of the siblings: My Uncle Paul Hayden and My Aunt Cynthia Hayden LeRoy.  I’m claiming it.  My mother’s family is the Hayden family which Hayden Road is named.
